What Design Features Do Craftsman-Style Homes Have?

The American Craftsman style home, a.k.a. arts and crafts style is all about handcrafted arts and craft elements, yet historically, still, an inexpensive home to build.

The Craftsman style evolved in America in response to the stuffy ornate style of Victorian homes at the end of the 20th century. Its purpose was to provide a nice, handcrafted home with fine architectural details at low cost.

In a nutshell, the craftsman design can be identified by the following:

Exterior

  • Large overhanging eaves
  • Hipped/gabled roofs
  • Tapered square columns supporting the roof:  I think this is definitely one of the most distinguishing features which are trendy again with contemporary craftsman homes.
  • Large, full-width porches: Another iconic feature of Craftsman homes.
  • Exposed beams
  • Stone covered foundation:  This adds a nice decorative touch to the home instead of just exposed concrete.
  • Use of stained glass in windows and exterior doors.
  • Dormer windows.

Interior

  • Open floor plan: This is definitely a much-desired design feature today and so it makes sense the Craftsman is a very popular design for contemporary homes.
  • Plenty of built-in wood elements such as cabinetry, fireplace mantles, bookcases, etc.

  • Use of natural materials such as wood, stone, brick, glass, and tile.
  • Plenty of windows.
  • Color scheme: earth tones and plenty of wood.

American Craftsman style home offers a number of design features that distinguish the craftsman style from other styles including the fact that it has a separate entry space and a porch that operates as an extension of the living space itself. You'll find a lot of direct and natural light in this style of home and you're definitely going to notice that everything is made by hand. You'll be able to see the joints in the furniture and the frame of the house and you'll also be able to recognize the differences in ceiling height, the millwork, and even the boxed beams that go along with this design style home. When it comes to decorative accents wainscoting and chair rail are definitely components of this beautiful design.

Furniture

With the craftsman furniture style, you'll find upholstered pieces that combine the use of leather and oversize tacks to get a more rustic look. The furniture will often feature these accents and will also have more understated designs to it than you'll find in other styles. It has very basic elements that have that same handcrafted style. You will see some accents, however, in things like carving and especially in carved balustrades up to the staircase. This helps to add a little more décor to space. Even still, there is a more simplistic style to everything as it tends to be focused more on the overall elements of the room itself rather than a lot of pieces throughout it. This is a very comfortable style, however, and the entire home will reflect the designs of craftsman furniture.

Craftsman-Style Landscaping

This is a wonderful feat of wilderness landscaping that has its own flowing stream bordered with varying sizes of rocks. This follows the lay of the walkway to the main door. This walkway is lined by rows of shrubbery that match with the huge pine tree.

Included Craftsman Styles

Subsumed under the "Craftsman" umbrella term are several well-known designs. They include:

1. Bungalow

The original craftsman style built extensively throughout America. Here's an example (without all the text and arrows):

4. Contemporary Craftsman

Today's craftsman style homes are usually in the bungalow style, but much, much bigger. Some are rather luxurious which in a way by the original bungalow. Nevertheless, the contemporary craftsman incorporates many design features of the original bungalow. Here's an example:

Materials

The most popular materials for this design style are definitely linen, burlap, and even grasscloth with hand-stitched accents or even printed accents to evoke a more old-fashioned style. When it comes to the wood you'll find some very rich grained pieces that are generally going to be made with oak. The oak, however, is then fumed or even stained to get a darker look rather than the natural lightness. Metal pieces are common though they'll generally be a hammered style to give a more rough texture and appearance to the pieces throughout the room. Colors of sage, deeper yellow, and terracotta, as well as other warm colors,  are common along with wallpapers in nature-inspired tones and looks.

Décor Accessories

Decorative aspects of the craftsman style are very basic as well and tend to be a little bit old style including mantel clocks and even lanterns. These pieces are generally going to be a little bit basic and won't have a lot of exterior styling either. The main focus is on their usefulness and versatility. They will likely be handcrafted and styled to make sure that they have a more rustic appearance and a natural fit into this type of room. You'll also generally find things like framed tiles that help to accent the space and provide a more artistic look.

Other decorative aspects may be the actual woodwork itself which will be highlighted throughout the space. Rather than spending a lot of time and effort on other decorative pieces, the wood will be highlighted as an accent of its own. This is especially true in areas like support beams and millwork which will often be exposed and may be carved or otherwise detailed to help draw attention to it and make it look even more special and important overall. These aspects can definitely create a unique appearance for the home and showcase the skills of the designer as well as any accessories. c

Why it Looks Great

So, just why does this style look great? Well, there are a lot of reasons that it's a beautiful style and the most popular one is that it showcases the handiwork of the person who built it and created it. This design style is all about the natural beauty of the woodwork and what the designer and the builder did to create it. By showcasing these aspects the craftsman style is actually formed and the more natural elements there are to showcase the better the design for those who like this particular layout. It definitely does create one of a kind feel and an inspiration that can't be found in any other style

1. How to clean a shower head (2,900 monthly searches)

Not sure how to clean your shower head efficiently? Simply pour some white vinegar into a plastic bag and secure it around your shower head with a hair tie. Leave overnight and remove first thing in the morning. You'll be amazed at the results!

2. How to clean a shower (2,400)

Cleaning a shower might seem like a simple task, but it seems many of us are baffled at how to get it properly clean.

The team at Drench explain a simple way to restore its sparkle using vinegar: 'Bring vinegar to a boil then use the warm vinegar to wipe down the shower door and walls. Keep them damp by wiping down every five to eight minutes for 30 minutes. Next, dampen a microfibre cloth in vinegar, a sprinkle of baking soda, and scrub.'

3. How to clean a toilet (2,000)

Want to clean your toilet like a pro? For the best results, simply pour a cup of vinegar into the bowl and let it sit overnight. In the morning, sprinkle with baking soda and scrub well. Afterwards, flush everything away and you'll be left with a spotless toilet.

4. How to clean shower glass (2,000)

Distilled vinegar can work wonders on your shower glass (and on your windows, too). Simply fill a spray bottle with equal parts of white vinegar and water, and spray your shower door. For a streak-free shine, opt for an affordable squeegee.

Not sure what to do? The team suggest: 'Pour a pot of boiling water down the drain. Next, pour 125g of baking soda down the drain, followed with a one-part water, one-part white vinegar solution. Wait five to 10 minutes before boiling water down the drain again.'

6. How to clean a bathtub (1,000)

Bathtubs can harbour grime, dirt and bacteria over time. While many of us will naturally reach for the nearest bathroom spray to wipe it down, vinegar works even better.

'To clean, wipe the bathtub over with straight vinegar, then sprinkle with some bicarbonate soda, before using a scratch-resistant cloth to scrub and rinse.'

7. How to clean bathroom tiles (900)

One of the best ways to tackle tiles is to mix ½ cup of white (distilled) vinegar together with a litre of warm water. Then, use the solution on a soft cloth and scrub well. Not only will it leave your tiles looking as good as new, but it will also keep your bathroom smelling fresh.

8. How to clean a shower curtain (720)

If your shower curtain is machine washable, simply pop it into the drum with your normal detergent and 125g of baking soda. 'Wash in hot water at the highest level. At the rinse cycle, add 125g of distilled white vinegar. If it's a fabric curtain, let it run through the spin cycle, but if its plastic, then remove it beforehand and leave it to hang in the bathroom,' explain Drench.

9. How to clean bathroom grout (470)

To restore your bathroom's sparkle, spray non-distilled white vinegar straight onto the dirty grout and leave for 15 minutes. Then, use an old toothbrush and scrub it away. It's as simple as that.

10. How to remove toilet stains (260)

Over the years, you may notice your toilet harbouring more stains at the bottom of the bowl and on the rim.

To keep it clean, the team at Drench explain: 'Soak some paper towels with white vinegar, then tuck the towels up under the rim of the bowl. Leave it for a few hours, remove the paper towels and then scrub clean, with white vinegar in a plastic bottle.'

Music streaming service Spotify is increasing its prices after the company warned of doing so last year. Many subscribers will be affected by Spotify's price increase and some have already started receiving emails notifying them of the changes.

In the US, the Spotify price hike will affect Family plans. Meanwhile, over in Europe and UK, Spotify prices will go up for Student, Duo, and Family plans. The increased prices will take effect starting April 30.

Spotify's Family plan is increasing from $14.99 per month to $15.99 in the US. Thankfully, prices for the Duo, Premium, and Student plans will remain unchanged in the country, at least for now.

Subscribers in the UK and Europe aren't as lucky. Student plan pricing for Spotify in the UK is increasing from £4.99 to £5.99 per month. The Family Spotify plan that allows up to six people to use the service will now be priced at £16.99, up from £14.99 per month. The Duo plan for two people is also going up from £12.99 to £13.99 a month.

Spotify subscription prices will also go up for some countries in Asia and South America.

European Spotify prices will see a similar uptake. The Duo and Student plans in the region will go up by a euro to
€12.99 and €5.99 per month. Meanwhile, the Family plan will rise to €17.99 from €14.99 per month.

Some countries in Asia and South America will also reportedly see Spotify subscription prices increasing.

Confirming the price hike in a statement to The Verge, a Spotify spokesperson said, "We offer a variety of subscription plans tailored to our users' needs, and we occasionally update our prices to reflect local macroeconomic factors and meet market demands while offering an unparalleled service."

Existing subscribers will only notice a price increase during the June billing period.

Spotify will also allow all subscribers a one-month grace period before prices are increased. This way, existing subscribers will only notice a price increase during the June billing period.

The service's price increase comes after the company made a loss of €125 million (~$150 million) in the last quarter of 2020. By raising its subscription prices, Spotify could up its overall earnings without getting more people to sign up for the service.

Wallpaper may seem like a dated idea, but many of today's modern prints and designs look nothing like those blocky, geometric designs from days gone by. Bold prints and striking patterns that might look overwhelming in a larger space can really shine in a small bathroom. Choose an accent wall and decorate it with bright colors or a punchy pattern or go dramatic and wallpaper the entire bathroom in a textured print.

Keep Counter Lines Clean

If you have an ample budget, changing your bathroom counter can really change the entire feel of the bathroom. Choose a design that adds crisp, clean lines to the space. Decorative finishes and scalloped edges may seem fancy and tempting, but they can distract from the rest of the room and diminish your counter space.
